Custom Business Solutions Releases NorthStar Point of Sale 4.5

– New Software Update Includes Key Productivity Enhancements for Hospitality Environments –

(IRVINE, CA) Aug. 13, 2018 – Every day hospitality operators across the country rely on cloud-based NorthStar point of sale software, developed by Custom Business Solutions, to smoothly manage thousands of orders in full service, quick serve and fast casual restaurant locations. Today Custom Business Solutions announces the release of NorthStar 4.5 with key productivity enhancements to help hospitality environments increase speed of service, manage security and drive efficiency for guests and servers.

“Our goal is to allow restaurants more time to engage with their guests by reducing the time it takes to manage ordering. Our software does just that, and NorthStar 4.5 boosts speed and order accuracy even more in busy restaurants. With our in-depth industry knowledge and operator feedback, we have added critical enhancements to NorthStar to deliver the results restaurants need to be successful,” said Jeremy Julian, COO at Custom Business Solutions.

The top enhancements to NorthStar 4.5 include:

  • Manager swipe override. In a fast-paced restaurant waiting for a manager to override a transaction can cost valuable time. The new manager swipe override allows a manager to use high-level job functions while the server is still working on the check. By swiping a manager card on the server’s check, the manager has control of the screen. After the function is completed, whether it’s a comp, delete or discount, the manager taps the screen and the control reverts to the server. This feature does not allow the server to continue in manager mode, further enhancing security for the transaction.
  • Alpha-Numeric table coding. As an enhancement to NorthStar’s best-in-class table map, tables may be numbered or labeled with alphanumeric labels such as ”Bar,” “To-Go,” “Outside” or “Patio.” This new feature helps servers more quickly identify the table and increase efficiency while decreasing training time. In an industry where turnover is high, this detailed tool can have a big impact on training and getting servers ready to be self-sufficient on the floor.
  • Item search. For operators with extensive menus, this search enhancement saves critical time. The item search function allows servers to immediately find items on the system by entering a word or only a few letters. The search is faster than a drop down menu and particularly helpful with new menu items, large wine or spirits lists, or specials.

  • Microsoft Announces POSReady 2009 will Reach the End of its Extended Support.

A notice to our POSitouch community:

On April 9, 2019, Microsoft POSReady 2009 will reach the end of its extended support period with Microsoft.

What does this mean and why should you care?

We want you to care because we do. When a site is not up to date on these upgrades, it puts your sites at risk of PCI compliance violations. Not only are there fines for not being PCI compliant, but if you are breached/hacked, you are considered liable, which could result in additional fines.

Here is something directly from the PCI Security Guide section 6.2: Ensure that all system components and software are protected from known vulnerabilities by installing applicable vendor-supplied security patches. Install critical security patches within one month of release.

The bottom line is that if you’re using POSReady 2009 or any other unsupported system, it is very important that you update your POS operating system or get in touch with us to discuss upgrading as soon as possible. The team here is trained, knowledgeable and ready to assist.

What does the “end-of-support” mean? PCI Data Security Standard states that all systems used by parties processing credit cards be patched and supported by their respective vendors. Clients not using a supported operating system are not PCI compliant and must update to a supported operating system immediately. To sum this up, you will not be in the scope of PCI compliance and could face fines. PCI StandardsWhat is PCI? The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of security standards designed to ensure that ALL companies that accept, process, store or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment. Visit the PCI Security Standard website for more information.
